Really starting to take shape -- looks great. Thanks for the updates! Can't wait to see it out in the sun in its full glory.

p.s., That CIS injection looks virtually identical to the CIS in my '79 mercedes. Go figure...

Thanks Tom! My plan is to have it ready mid april. Still alot of small tasks here and there which takes alot of time so will see if the plan holds. Enjoying myself so no worries if it doesn't 😀

Yes I guess the CIS was very similar between cars of the period. That Mercedes you have sounds like a nice drive!

Ok so I am waiting for parts to arrive so I can finish my car but fenders and hood is on together with new weather seals in the doors and alot of other small items.

Will start with general service this week aswell with fluids, filter, plugs etc.

My phonedials are getting new tires so fitted the 951 Turbo S wheels while waiting and they really suit the car aswell I think, also 35mm spacers fitted in the rear 🙂👌

This car brings back memories of my father's (R.I.P.) 1979 928 5MT. I only got to drive it a few times as he was retired in Arkansas and we live in the Seattle area, but I found the experience to be rather unique with the odd 5-speed shift pattern.

I've really enjoyed reading through this thread; it may get me motivated to start tearing apart the '89 951 for a repaint.

Looking better and better all the time! Those D90 wheels, although not "Correct" for your car, really do update the look quite a bit. And truth be told, the wider rears and the added spacers make the rear look a lot more muscular. The original 7" wide wheels in the wide hips just don't do justice to the shape from the rear.

I'd have to search a bit to find the wheel manufacturer in Canada who is making a really good replica phone-dial wheel in your choice of sizes and offsets for a not-too-unreasonable cost. If you want to have the original looks but with more contemporary tires sizes, it's a great way to go. Let me know if that interests you and I'll run down the information again.


My '89 S4 came originally with forged "flat" faced or "manhole cover" wheels in 16" diameters. I found a set of new take-off 17" wheels and tires from a ~2002 C4 that have been on there since. I still have the original wheels and tires from the car (30+ years old!) in case there's a contest, plus a set of the same wheels chromed that were donated to me. The rears are a size common to some early 930's (245/45-16") that are really hard to find in decent rubber these days. After riding in some 928's with 18" wheels/tires, I'm sticking with the 17's so long as I can still buy good tires for them. The 18" wheels rode really poorly. Some of that goes to the poor front offsets of course. The 18" tires are such low profile that rims seem to get damaged more from potholes and such too.

Yes the dogleg pattern needs some time to adjust to but I really like it. I just sold my old 1980 931 which also has that same pattern, a really fun little car.

These early 928:s have a unique charm that the later cars lack a bit of that really speak to me🙂

If you like working on your cars I really think you should go ahead with that respray, it is a very enjoyable work👌

Thanks Bob! Yes these forged 951 S wheels look really good on the car, surprised me really!🤔 They are a bit "titanium like" in the finish which suits really well with the creamy mokkabrown color I think🙂

However I really love the clean classic look of the early 78-79 928:s with the 7" phonedials which really sets them apart from the later cars so they will stay on the car. With the 35mm spacers they fill out the rear alot better like you mention which was my feeling aswell.
Thanks for the tip on the custom wheels. I read about something like it a few years back and looked into 18" phonedials for the 944 Turbo Cup car I had but shipping and custom/vat to Sweden gets to pricey.
I also think the car rides so well on the 16" and agree with you that 18" dont suit the 928. I had a -89 GT a few years ago with 18" on but changed back to the stock 16" which felt so much better. 17" like you have is probably the best for the later cars.

Regarding the use of 18" wheels on 928s, 944s, 951s, I think it really depends on your suspension components. I have 18" BBS RS-GTs on my S2 and another set will go on the 951 when it gets its Motion Control Suspension upgrade. Yes, they do ride stiffer but I don't find them to be too bad on the S2. I have 19" RS-GTs with 235/35-19 on my 2003 A4 and it rides quite well considering the low profile tires and stiff springs. In this case I think the Ohlins dampers help a lot! YMMV.

@dr bob : The wheel manufacturer you're thinking of is Augment. They have some great designs.

@Pefa : I am impressed and jealous of your work and attention to detail with this car. My '90 GT project will have to go through some paint work and it's really nice to see what a transformation it can have on a car. I would also like to address many of the other small bits which inevitably need attention, so I guess it's ultimately a good thing that the car is in so many pieces at the moment!

Yes suspension is definetely a factor. You have really nice parts on those cars🙂👍

However if the car in question is designed for a smaller wheel it gets a "heavier" feeling with a bigger wheel. On the 944 Turbo Cup car I had and tracked alot I used both the 16" magnesium phonedials and 18" BBS E88 racewheels but it was definetely more nimble on the 16:s. Look was cooler though on the BBS🙂
