It's invasion by the Underground Rodents.
My wife has flowers planted. The local deer population has been spotted eating the plants in the early morning. They leave around daylight to a large protected preserve just north of the neighborhood.

Those aren't the words I used, but yes. Next year, we're digging out all the dirt and lining the planter with stainless chicken wire. Why stainless? Because the same gopher chewed through the regular chicken wire we put under the backyard lawn!
