I was sitting in my 2008 BMW 135i today and suddenly realized it had a conventional mechanically operated parking brake.
I started thinking why manufacturers change design and decided that 2 things come into play - function and cost.
I never use the mechanical parking brake and just place the transmission in park.
I can see where the electronic parking brake saves literally millions of dollars for a high volume manufacturer.
Then I started thinking about plastic fasteners vs metal screws - not only are they probably cheaper but are faster to install
More millions in the manufacturers pocket.
Now I will go back to sleep
