All-Electric 718 by 2025...

This is the Mission R 1000+ hp EV racer from Porsche, which many believe foreshadows a 718 street car.

At Porsche annual conference today, CEO Olivier Blume said that they plan to have an all-electric 718 by the middle of the decade, and most new outlets are saying that mean 2025. Wonder if our old ICE cars will be like the last of the air-cooled cars in terms of value. Either way, time for us old-timers to buckle up, we're not in Kansas anymore. You can downoad a pdf of his speech below -- some pretty interesting stuff in there about all things Porsche. Here is an excerpt from Blume's published speech re the EV 718:

"Electrification of the 718

--The race track has traditionally been the birthplace of new technologies for us,
which we then transfer to the road.

--Think of the 919 Hybrid, with which we won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times
on the trot – and which, with its 800-volt technology, was the inspiration for the
Taycan.

--The Mission R, too, will be an inspiration for our production cars: for our mid-engined sports car, the 718.

--We aim to electrify this model line in the middle of the decade.

--We want to offer the 718 exclusively as an all-electric model.

--The all-electric 718 is the progressive evolution of the mid-engine design.

--We are sticking to our well-known same-parts principle for the new generation as
well. This will make it possible to produce the 718 and the 911 on the two-door
line here in Zuffenhausen in the future too.

--Our aim is clear: we want the 718 to be the best all-electric vehicle in the B
segment."

I'm actually ok with this. First off, there aren't many two seater electric roadsters yet and Porsche should be one of the first. Second, they will surely make an incredible machine out of it - giving us a whole new experience.

No ...it won't be the same as ICE...no it won't have the sound... no it won't be light weight. That's ok! Don't buy one if that's what you want, but see it as a new experience! This stuff is inevitable so don't hate too much. In the mean time, hug your ICE car as long as you can. : )

This is precisely why I purchased a new one recently. I will go to my grave owning an ICE Porsche.

I think the prospect of an all electric 718 in the Porsche lineup is intriguing.
The Taycan is an amazing vehicle with impressive performance, certainly not the same as an ICE Porsche, but exciting on its own level.
I love my GTS 4.0, but an electric 718 is the future and its arrival should boost the value of the ICE 718s. Win/win.

I think it will be fun to play with. However, I still wonder if the car companies and EU will walk back the timeline. The majority of electricity to power electric cars is coming from fossil fuels. Unlike Moore's Law, you're dealing with physical constraints, not digital ones. Even if you tripled the demand for electric vehicles (roughly 15-20% of total cars), there aren't enough alternative sources of energy to keep pace. On top of that, rare earth materials required to make batteries will requiring travelling farther and digging deeper. Perhaps they will find a more efficient battery not requiring these materials?

i like the direction Porsche is going with synthetic fuel. Carbon neutral and can power ICE cars without any major changes to infrastructure. My best guess is the magic formula will be a combination of different energy sources (electric, hydrogen, synthetic fuel, etc).

I just wish all the EV vehicles were technology driven and not government mandated. Let every technology win or lose on it's merits in the marketplace with no subsidies. I fear we're rushing headlong into something without understanding allnthe ramifications and unintended consequences. For now
I'll keep my ICE GTS. I do have a deposit down for a Lucid, but more as a lark than anything. See my experience with a Taycan runnin' on empty under the 'changing my CF steering wheel " thread for it.

While EV Sports cars don’t make sense to me personally I have full faith that if anyone can do it Porsche can.

Plus in the spirit of Porsche delivery on game changing technology there is some really cool stuff on that Mission R. For example the breaks work on 800kw architecture for regen too. So you get rapid energy replacement from break regen too, which I believe is an industry first

Here's a recent Hagerty article with additional thoughts and info on the syn fuel (e-fuel) project from Porsche's collaboration with Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) Global. I'm quite hopeful as the project moves forward. Others are working on similar projects which also bodes well.

The conclusions made by the author regarding feasibility are positive, although he acknowledges that challenges remain. Some nuanced experts are echoing thoughts that it will take all three—battery electric vehicles, bio-fuels [such as ethanol] and e-fuel - to achieve the many recent lofty government goals with their highly questionable timelines.

Assuming the promise of syn-fuel is achieved, it would be of great benefit for classic, current and future ICE vehicles.
