I attempted to replace my worn G50 shifter bushings and I failed.

The car goes into gear fine but once it’s in gear the shifter wiggles like the lever in a type 2 VW bus. This never really bothered me too much and I just accepted it as part of the charm of driving an old Porsche. But lately I’ve been driving my 2024 Acura Integra Type S and have gotten spoiled by the engagement of the snick, snick rowing through the gears, that jumping to the 911 just feels sloppy. The 911 subject is a 1988 Carrera with about 62k miles on the clock.

I watched the YouTube videos and read the threads seems simple enough, half dozen screws, couple of bolts, rubber o’rings, and plastic bushings.
Ordered the J West kit and went at it.

The issue is the harness with the a/c controller and hazards rear defrost. There is not nearly enough slack to leave everything connected to lift the console over the shift lever to get to the linkage. All videos and threads advise not to disconnect the electrical connections. I did control myself and did not use my usual method of applying more force. I buttoned everything back up and admitted defeat as it was now well past beer thirty.

Is there a trick I’m missing? How do I get more slack out of the harness without braking 35+ year old brittle plastic plugs? I know from experience the engineers were not very generous with supplying excess wire when taking out my speedometer to send out for repair to the odometer.

What was the context of the situations causing others to advise to not disconnect the wiring to the console ? As long as you record on paper/ photographically / labelling what wire was attached to what terminal, disconnecting wires shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve removed my console (‘87 Targa) with no ill effects,
