History:
The car was special ordered and delivered by Porsche LA. The original was an older gentleman and significant Porsche collector from Santa Barbara who knew the flat 6’s were going away. He was told, at the time, that there were only two remaining 981 GTS allocations remaining in the US, so he took the opportunity to spec this one out of LA. Key to the build was maintaining light weight and simplicity while spec’ing some creature comforts and cosmetic style. Notably, and very rare for these cars, is spec’ing the ‘base’ seat. The ’base’ GTS seat is, essentially, the 18-way adaptive sport seat shells but without all of the motors. They’re 4-way adjustable with power tilt. It’s estimated to save about 30 pounds per seat / 60 pounds total. They’re not as light as the carbon buckets but offer a great compromise. PTV was a great choice, as was sticking with the standard PASM vs the X73 option. While the X73 setup is excellent, the PASM gives more flexibility and a more forgiving ride height for a street car. A swap out to X73 is easy an relatively inexpensive but I think the PASM with DSC controller is a superior setup for this car.
The car was delivered in April 2016 and the original owner put ~7k miles on the car in his 5 1/2 trouble-free years with the car. He, obviously, drove it sparingly and gently as evidenced by the PPI / DME that I did at purchase. He kept the car beautifully clean and garaged but wasn’t a fan of ‘modern’ things like PPF and ceramic coatings.
I had been looking for a car with this spec for ages, having owned multiple Boxsters prior and wanting to get back into one that I thought I’d keep forever. The seller only advertised it on PCA.org. I saw his ad two days after posting and contacted him. He’d already had three offers on the car but no full price offers. After a 30 minute conversation with him, I agreed to pay his asking price pending seeing the car in person. I drove to Santa Barbara to see him (and his amazing collection) and he checked out (“buy the seller, not the car”). The car did too.
I brought it home and immediately did my ‘keep the car forever’ mods: full paint correction / 10 year ceramic coating (which has been refreshed every year since), PPF, and the couple minor mods noted. I put new tires on it (only 7k miles on old ones but they were 6 years old), and a new battery was installed as part of the PPI. And, since then, I’ve driven and enjoyed the heck out of this car. I did the serpentine belt, spark plugs, oil, brake fluid, etc when I got it home, and just recently did new tires (PS4’s), oil, air / cabin filters, and brake fluid flush so the new owner shouldn’t have to do anything for quite some time. And the car has never had a mechanical hiccup…not one.
The 981 BGTS is a really special car and this car is a rare build (perhaps a true ‘one of one’) but I’ve decided to sell it to direct funds into more regular track time. Having recently purchased a 718 GT4, I need to free up some space and capital.
Notes:
The car presents very well inside and out. It is detailed regularly (the ceramic coating helps a lot) and we take special care of the all surfaces including the Alcantara (especially the steering wheel so it doesn’t get ‘crusty’). I chose not to put wheel spacers on the car, despite the potential cosmetic advantage, to better preserve the paint. There is very minor evidence of debris strikes at the rear vents (pictured). There is minor wear on the driver’s side seat bolster (pictured) and the hood recently got struck with a few rocks that caused three minor dings in the PPF (pictured).
I have a lot more pics available and happy to do a video walk-around or other for prospective buyers.
