Hello Carpokes. I have a 987.1 S and I've just been investigating my 4-6 cylinder bores. The car doesn't tick, no sooty left tailpipe, no oil consumption and my first UOA was very clean. Spark plugs were perfect. The car currently has 95000 kms(59000 miles) on it. It has been tracked at PCA DE's by the pervious owner. The car has a Softronic tune, Intake, headers and high flow cats/valved exhaust. I didn't get any service history with the car other than being told it was always serviced at Porsche. The owner didn't know what oil was used in the car but I think I can safely assume it was Mobil 1. I currently have Driven FR50 in the car but seeing as it's been discontinued, I plan on running Motul 300V competition in 5w-40 or 50. No cold weather starts and I always start driving after startup with an under 3K rule until engine is warmed up and then it's a gradual build to higher revs. I only rev to around 6500-6700rpm(rod bolt fears) Minimal idling and no short trips . I have pulled the Durametric data and there was no major issues. Definitely shifts in the 1 and 2 range, and some 3's but nothing of note beyond that. Seems to be a fair bit of carbon buildup on the piston tops and top of the bores. I only run Shell 93 fuel and I'm hoping this starts to clean up the carbon the more I drive it. The car runs beautifully, sounds amazing and pulls very, very hard.

The bores appear to have some scratches, not sure if it's actually "scored" or not? Bores were inspected through the spark plug holes. (Dates are a bit off on the pics as I just got the scope and didn't set up the date initially)

Let me know your thoughts. Personally I think the bores look pretty good and have many more miles of use left in them with proper maintenance and care.

In my opinion cylinders 5 + 6 are starting to show minor bore scoring . Do you have a trusted mechanic knowledgeable about Porsche's that you can show the pics to ? I would run at a minimum 5w50 oil and preferably 15w50 . Change your oil once a year or 5k miles max and do oil analysis . I think you have many miles ahead of you .

Thanks for that. I’m already running Driven FR50 oil and the plan was to go back to Redline 5w40 or Motul competition 5w40 or 5w50. I truly believe Moly is the answer to this issue and .
I’ve done 2 UOA’s so far and both were quite good. There was super light traces of white metal in the second UOA I did.(rod or main bearings IMO) but that was it. Not sure why that is happening?
I do plan on tracking the car so it’ll definitely see frequent oil changes. I guess I’ll just have to keep driving it and see what happens.

I would NOT recommend going back to a 40 weight oil , especially if you are going to track it . Thermal runaway is real as is thermal viscosity shearing . I would suggest an extended sump and the addition of the UAOS track version . This will allow you to run 11 - 12 quarts of oil . And add a oil temp gauge .
