Short Shifter

Anyone install a short shifter in their 718? Worth it?

Many have. I've also swapped the shifter in my CTM6 for a functionally identical Numeric brand shifter. Worth it depends on you. Most - not all - prefer the shorter rod. Note that the only difference is the length of the rod, which lowers the groove that the shift knob locks onto. So, you give up some mechanical leverage for lower height and shorter throws.

I replaced the stock shifter housing and shifter cables with Numerics. The shifter housing was relatively easy to install but the Porsche trim does not come off easily. You really have to take your time and you still risk damaging things.

The cables were very time consuming. The enjoyment I get out of the increased precision and feel is just worth all that trouble, in my book, but barely. The stock cables do have a tendency to break, leaving people stuck in or out of gear or preventing them from engaging some gears until fixed. Supposedly Numeric cables are significantly less likely to have those issues, so I've told myself it was definitely worth is.

If a friend asks me to help them install the same parts on their own car, I will ghost them. New friends are easier to come by.

I’ve done so many short shifters from BMW to Honda to Mazda. All of them had some compromises. S2000 OEM shifter is probably the best shifting experience from factory.

Does the Numeric feel that much better than stock in Porsche cars? Any compromises that give cause for concern on long term wear?

So far I have only swapped to a shorter but heavier weighted shift knob. I like this change quite a bit so far. Would love to test drive someones car who has done the Numeric upgrade. One day hopefully.

To me, the feel was the same when compared to my CTM6's stock 'shorty' shifter (Post#2 above), which had roughly 30k miles. Other people have said they feel flex in the stock unit, which is what the Numeric video purports to demonstrate (unconvincingly, to me).

I tested both, and could not detect any flex in either shifter, but the cables do flex a bit. I think there is little question that the Numeric has no 'compromises.' Indeed, it appears built to outlast the stock unit by decades. I just don't think it outperforms now. So, I would call it an unnecessary, high-quality, and expensive durability upgrade.

I switched to the Short shifter and found it to be a welcomed change. The shifter knob sits lower and allows the hand to be in a better position and the gear changes are more direct but not notchy. I am very pleased and it changes the driving experience.
