Hello,
While I am new to Carpokes, I have been with the 911 world since 1999. I had a 1969 911T until 2017. It had been converted to a 930 clone some time in the early 80’s. I bought it in a series of boxes, built it into an IROC clone and enjoyed driving it for 15 years.
After I sold it I wanted something a bit more refined and picked up a 2000 996 C2 in 2019. It does have the M030 sport suspension and factory sport exhaust. I even found my preferred color in Ocen Metallic with Grey interior. This was a color combination I have always loved.
Since purchasing the car, I replaced the front lower control arms and tuning forks to eliminate the dreaded front end squeak. Upon removal of the control arms I found the ball joints we the actual cause of the squeak. Lo and behold the steering response was quickly elevated to something I was expecting.
I have put about 8,000 miles on it since the purchase and the only modification I made was to install a modern Apple Car Play radio. I did not go with the Porsche Classic but instead went with a Pioneer unit. I am very happy with the finished product as it looks like it came that way.
Next item planned is to install a pair of Recarro seats that were in my 1969. I am also contemplating installing a pair of 200 cell cats. This is somewhat out of necessity as the front O2 sensors need to be replaced. So while I am in there … I figure the cat upgrade to be a wise choice.
Two other bucket list items I have are to install an Aero kit and coil overs once the suspension needs some work.
The car is strictly for road use, as I am not much of a track junkie, however I will say my road use falls into the ‘spirited’ driving category.
I enjoy doing all the maintenance on the car myself. I find some solace in working on the car.
I definitely fit the label of Petrol Head. In addition to the 911 I have an old Chevrolet Corvair and modern Pontiac GTO. It is always fun driving them back-to-back as they all present a thrill when I drive them, albeit totally different driving experiences. The Corvair is a bit of a resto mod, still flat 6 air cooled. The GTO has quite a few suspension mods and handles amazingly well for a big heavy car.
All of this leads me to a couple of questions specific to the 996:
Have any of you installed 200 cell cats? If so, was there much of a difference in sound? I would like a little more volume from the exhaust, but not overbearing.
Have any of you installed Recarro seats with sliders? If so, did that raise the seat up too much? I have read where the seats can put you up higher than stock.
Glad to be part of the forum and contributing where I can.
