Hello All…
Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I’m a few months shy of 80 and have owned two Porsches over my lifetime. The first, a ‘67 912, I bought in 1971, shortly after being discharged from the Army…it spent time in Colorado and New England before succumbing to the elements. My current Porsche is a ‘76 912E…it shares space in my garage with a ‘58 Bug Eye Sprite. I’m looking forward to learning more about these wonderful cars from you guys.

Your current 912E looks new yet it's almost 50 years old! Outstanding! And I love the subdued, gorgeous shade of yellow - in my view, it's just about perfect, most especially for that particular car. It suits it well.

Interesting side story regarding Massachusetts is that I was stationed at Ft Devens outside of Ayer for about 15 months from late Fall '70 thru all of 1971. I met someone off-post who had a 912 that I got to ride in a bit. That was my first inro into the Porsche universe, albeit only as a passenger.

Welcome to Carpokes!

Thanks for the welcome, Tim…
Ft. Devins was inactivated and closed as an active Army installation in1996, but it probably outlasted your friends 912. New England winters with salt treated roads were unkind to the non-galvanized Porsches of that era. The survivors today come from warmer, drier climates.

I knew Ft Devens had closed at some point but wasn't sure when - I had a lot of great memories of my time in the area.

And yes, salt! Plenty of it in MA as well as at my then home of Michigan in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area. Parts of Detroit are over a salt mine and they loved layering the roads with the stuff. The more the merrier was the mantra back then! Ziebart, constant washings, loving care - nothing worked. Sadly, driven vehicles rusted into oblivion.

As you mentioned, it's much better in other climates for cars, such as what we have in TN, the home I returned to in the mid-80s.

Once again, welcome to Carpokes Bruce - we're glad you found the site and joined the friendly community!
