Can someone refresh my memory here.

The one pic is the block that was in my 86…..not sure if it’s the original engine.

The second is my 3.0L block.

Trying to determine which balance shaft bearing set the 8R block needs. The 4R is the 3.0L block.

Annoyingly these part numbers don’t exist in the PET when you search them. Not sure why Porsche stamp the block with these numbers if there is no reference.

I have to dig around my basement for the balance shafts to measure the journal size.

Just want to make sure if I order 86 balance shaft bearings they will fit.

I have an '86 and a 3L block on stands. Will check numbers if needed. Please confirm, but I'm fairly sure the front nose bearings (full loop) are the same for all blocks, part 944.10.125.02; and the rear half shells depend on whether you have the separate bearing cap under the cover, or if the bearing cap is integrated into the cover like in the picture below (changed happened in or after '86). The bearings for the blocks with separate bearing caps are 944.101.121.07; and if the bearing cap is part of the b/s cover it is 944.101.121.10.

I am going digging when I get home for the 86 block covers and balance shafts
Clearly I put them in a location where they can’t be stolen…..
I have my 3.0L b/s and my 87 2.5L blocks b/s on the bench but of course not my 86 which I need.
Pretty sure the 86 is identical to the other two blocks but I stumbled on info stating the rear seal and plug were different and something about journal size.

I need to buy another shelf as I am climbing over top of transaxles and blocks on stands and 6 car seats and bins of parts ready for plating …..very ridiculous indeed

Found my B/S covers

The block has caps on it so I will be ordering the 86 bearing kit set for it.

Quite a while ago I had cleaned and blasted and cleaned again my 86 balance shaft covers.

I had not yet done that to my 87 2.5L block covers.

So I decided to finish them and that way I can spray all six covers with an oil shedding coating.

This made me think I have an upper BS cover on my 924S project with a turbo oil line cap in it. Was there a change over to making all motors have that?

I am not sure on that. I can have a read through my factory manual when I get home as I need to refresh my memory to do the work. There might be a note about the covers.

Some of the NA 944 engine blocks have the upper BS cover drilled for turbo oiling. It doesn't seem consistent, though. I just got a 2.7 block in the shop that has a cover that's drilled and tapped, but I often have to machine them for the turbo oiling.

Did the factory install a plug on the N/A motors with drilled/tapped covers? I had to drill and tap both my 2.7 motors.

Yes, Tom. The left hand cover on this 2.7 has a threaded plug in it.
