My hood pads were just starting to deteriorate, which means I've been pretty lucky. I've read many stories about the foam hood pads disintegrating all over the engine compartment. Mine came off with a little persuasion, a putty knife, and patience.

I bought the aftermarket set of Replacement Hood Pads from @944online. They are fantastic.

I spent about 45 minutes with a heat gun, a stiff putty knife, and "Goof Off" solvent scraping the old adhesive and reinforcement fiber from the underside of my hood. Cover your engine with an old bed sheet or drop cloth or plastic. I didn't remove the hood. In hindsight, removing the hood would have been easier than leaning over and counter-bracing the hood with my free arm.

The surface doesn't need to be perfect, but it does need to be pretty good.

Take great care to not crack your windshield. The pointy ends of the hood come very very close to the windshield glass when the hood is open. It would be very very easy to overextend the hood right into the windshield. I padded those areas with cardboard and was super careful to counter-brace the force of my putty knife by using my free hand/arm on top of the hood. Success.

Looks great. Make me want to do mine again.

I did mine maybe 10 years ago and the factory replacement foam is already starting to fall apart.

I made a lot better progress using similar methods after taking off the hood. Much better leverage and the sun helped heat up the goo gone.
