This car is a two-owner effort. The first owner sought to recreate a 935 racing Flachbau. My effort has been to civilize the car for street use, while losing only minimum track capability. This car began life, like all 935's, as a 911 SC. It was initially stripped and triangulated, and then provided a new heart and lungs: A 3.6 liter dry sump rebuilt with Pauter rods, Porsche comp pistons, titanium valve train and more, plus a G50 five-speed transaxle upgraded with Albins ring & pinion and Guard LSD, a Kennedy clutch pack, lightened Patrick flywheel, Hargett shifter and much more. The sunroof was deleted in favor of a lightweight fiberglass GT Racing roof panel. The rear seat was deleted and a Safety Devices super-touring roll cage with low removable sidebars installed. Off went the front clip, in favor of a Rennspeed 935 executed in carbon fiber and fiberglass, and sporting bumper-mounted headlights like the originals. The rear clip was similarily excised, and replaced with Turbo 930 quarterpanels, Rennspeed fiberglass Turbo 930 / 3.8 RS 993 decklid and “tea-tray” spoiler. BBS Gold alloy wheels in 18" x 9 and 11" were fitted, along with Michelin Sport 2 tires. The front torsion bar suspension was replaced with a Tarrett 935 coilover setup, and the front seats replaced with Recaro Profi's. In place of the widowmaker turbo, a TPC supercharger was fitted, with linear throttle response the result. The list of further modifications goes on for pages. I evantually nominated the car "FLAKBAU", as only 7 characters fit on Michigan plates. Comments and discussion???

Barry T? My car's former owner? You get around, my friend. I saw an ad for this forum in Panorama, and some Porsche discussion sounded like fun. How's Mrs T? Man, am I spending the money on that Lola I emailed you on. However, it will be a short-term project, concluded by winter's end. Flakbau has been a long-term vision for both of us, largely because so much of her is so custom. This winter, I will refinish the BBS alloy wheels, rebuild the calipers and possibly install a special heater/air conditioner developed by Canepa. The entire assembly fits into the smuggler's box.

For anyone consuming our words, I add this: No man has been a better Porsche caretaker than Barry T!

TT U soon!

As more and more people join Carpokes, I'm hoping for more and more of these "hey, I know you" posts. :) Awesome to see you guys connect on our new forum. You've come to the right place! Thank you and welcome!

As for the 935 tribute, it's spectacular. Both the color and the rear spoiler give it a bit of a 993 vibe -- is that Arena Red from the 993 Turbo? Would love to see build pictures and hear more about the motor. 3.6 from a 964+ car or did it start life as a 911SC motor? Engine management? Details on the supercharger? I'm a boost junkie, and love conversions from n/a motors that actually work!

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your kind words but you have taken "Flakbau" to other worldly levels with your attention to detail and research on just the right modifications in your quest for perfection. Far beyond what I could have done. I was hoping to create the ultimate 911 Track Car but, 450 horsepower and 2450 pounds could not compete with the 650 horsepower and 2100 pounds found in the flood of Cup Cars from Europe.
Now that travel is freed up I look forward to a time when we can visit you and Flakbau in the near term future,.

All the best to you and yours Bruce,.

Hi all,

As for the color, the car started life as a Wine Red Metallic 1982 911SC. The paint was "tweaked" by Auto Associates of Canton, Inc (Canton, Connecticut) to inject just a bit more pizzazz into the new and improved slope nose configuration.
The engine upon which the supercharger was installed was a 964 3.6 liter twin plug version.

I will provide more information soon.

It IS Barry T - great! Good to hear all is well. Look forward to a visit when time permits.

The precise color chosen to tweak the Porsche wine red (aka Weinrotmetallic, Paint Code # 895) was very similar, but with the additional “pop” noted by Barry: Chrysler PRP “Deep Cherry Red Crystal”. The Chrysler color contains more metallic and deeper cherry than Porsche “Wine Red”. The Porsche paint has less metal and more purple and black pigments. For anyone interested, I have ATTACHED the history and build journal for Flakbau.

The color is Chrysler Deep Cherry Red Crystal, which was chosen by Barry (the car's first developer) because it is close to the original Porsche Wine Red, but with spicier metallic and a bit more pop (I've nicknamed it "Adult Candy Apple Red"). The shape of the car's exterior most closely resembles the second generation 935's, before Gen 3 and the ultra-wide rear featuring steamroller 14" rubber and extended kammback (see the middle car in the accompanying image). The later look is neither as pretty nor as practical as Gen Two. Like most of the privateer 935 builds, my car is fitted with later-issue heart and lungs. The motor is a performance-built dry-sump twin-plug 3.6 liter, and the transaxle is a built Getrag G50 5-speed, with ratios adjusted to provide a tick over 30 mph per gear. That's one shift to 60 - right where you want it. The Turbo 930's nom de guerre was "Widow Maker", because of wicked turbo lag that often resulted in uncontrollable spins. Thus, Barry opted for a Gen 3 TPC supercharger, transforming the horsepower graph into a straight line and providing a veritably linear throttle. I added a water-to-air intercooler for additional power and cooler running. I am not certain if the engine was originally boosted or not - I will find out from Barry. The boost level is a modest 7 pounds tapering down to 5, as Barry's development criteria placed a high priority on component longevity.

Hope to hear from you again!

UPDATE ON THE 935: During the 2022-2023 winter and following spring, I rebuilt and ceramic-coated the BBS E28 magnesium wheels; Exchanged the crepuscular original white incandescent gauge lighting for red LED's (both very bright and color-coordinated with the car's exterior); Rebuilt the entire brake system including new lines and calipers refinished in black with silver Porsche inscriptions; Completed restoration of the HV system (including freeing all the original cables - there is an oil injector tool now for that); new tires, up one size to massive 305's in the rear; And a new, larger 27 gallon fuel cell. I may add air conditioning next year, in the "smuggler's box" up front. After that, I need to consider an engine-out paint job - fortunately, the car is rust-free, so no bumping or repair will be required. The car is equipped with a competition-rebuilt, supercharged and intercooled 3.6 liter twin-plug motor (described above). The original owner, Barry from CT, triangulated the unibody and added many desirable suspension upgrades, including a Tarret 935 front suspension, so there is no additional work needed there. Weighing only 2,400 pounds, the performance is ferocious for a vintage car - keeps up to 90 or so with modern Turbo's. Various problems have prevented completion of the recent upgrades, but the car will be ready by the end of October, allowing me some fun fall motoring.
