*If* your ABS is still working, then some of those wires are safety-critical (the ABS wheel speed sensors).

That being said, the outer wiring sheath decays because Porsche (or Bosch?) decided to try out some biodegradable stuff. Results weren't great. But the inner insulation is fine and will last much longer, so re-wrapping is a fine option.

Oh I dunno. It seems excellent at biodegrading...

Thanks for the help.

To be honest, I'm not sure if the ABS is working. I've literally never felt it pulse in 15 years of ownership, and I have locked them up once or twice. But I don't get an ABS light on the dash and I've made it this far...

Yeah, a previous owner of my car "fixed" the ABS by removing the bulbs from the instrument cluster....

One day this week on the way to work I was on the freeway going about 140 km/h when the cars ahead looked suddenly stopped

I have never pushed so hard on the brakes. The car didn't seem to be slowing as much as I'd like... and for a moment it felt like I was going to plow right into the back of a Model Y.. but I stopped within a couple of meters and I could even steer it a bit (I was going to move off to the shoulder)

No lockup (mine didn't come with ABS)

I think those cheap Bosch "blue" brake pads are their own ABS

My understanding is that if you don't have ABS, only two wires are used out of this bundle and they are for the pad wear. If this is your situation, nothing critical.
