i think the car is absolutely gorgeous. Starting around $141k, that's awfully close to GT3 territory though...

i love my 911 and all 911's but i personally think the mid-engine setup lends itself to a much better visual design of the car and driving feel. The 911 is amazing no doubt, but i think if porsche swapped in all the engineering and tech into the cayman, it would be the better car... which they wont allow haha

The motor is from the GT3 (not 718) so they didn't hold back too much. And a 7:04+ 'ring time is bonkers and faster than a whole lot of really fast cars. The new GT3 gets around the ring faster still, which Preuninger tries to explain in this R&T article:

“With the GT3, we tried very hard and put everything on it we could,” Preuninger said. “It has rear-axle steering. This car doesn’t—it’s a mid-engine car, so it doesn’t need it, but it would surely make up a second or two or three.” Preuninger also pointed out the GT3’s double-wishbone front suspension, which the GT4 RS doesn’t get. Another factor: the GT3’s electronic limited-slip differential. “We don’t have the space [in the GT4 RS] for the hydraulic power pack for an electric diff, so we had to go with a mechanical diff.”

Preuninger also notes that the 911 GT3 makes more downforce than the Cayman GT4 RS, and the rear-engine car has room for wider tires. “It’s not only the engine [that makes you] quick on the Ring, it’s the rest of the car as well,” he said."



At any rate, the car is still mighty tempting. The $141k base sounds good too, but it can get well into GT3 price territory fast if outfitted like the press car. I played around with the configurator and got over $200k by loading up on options, though $160k or so would get you a nicely spec'd car...

It's very interesting because it solves the silly problem of putting the engine on the wrong side of the rear axle.

Supposedly it has heim joints and a loud intake which makes me just want to spend the money on a race car instead. It would be cheaper.

I am very jealous of the improved gearing though. If a GT4 remains my last ICE car, I will absolutely be looking to swap the gears out just so I can row them more in the hills.
