Factory LSD into Non-LSD transaxle

Hi All,

So, I started another thread looking for an AOT transaxle but it occurred to me that I've run across a few AOS boxes in my search and I'm wondering if a factory clutch-type LSD can be fitted to an open diff box.

I know there are torsion options but I'd really prefer to have some lock on decel and I'm aware of the OS Giken option but I'm not made of money, so I'm wondering if it's possible to build a solution out of factory parts.

Can it be done? Is it prohibitively expensive?

THere was a guy who put a 944 LSD in a 2000 Audi S4. Back when the 944 LSD was cheaper. I would think you could also do the reverse and put a Audi LSD in to a 944 then as well. There are a bunch of options that will probably reveal themselves when you look that way.

To save you some time, there was no OE LSD on the Audi. Only aftermarket options.

Thank you! From what little looking I've done this morning, it looks like aftermarket options are available and at least a little cheaper than similar options for the 944..

I had a factory 25/65 LSD from 993 turbo put into my 968 6-spd. I don't want to put you wrong but there is a lot of opinion and fact on what are the best aftermarket LSD for our cars. I know you're on the other forums so I'd start with looking up the guys that rebuild transaxles, like Kevin Gross or Dimi. There were a few people who were attempting to put Audi LSD's into the transaxles but can't recall the outcome.

Thanks! I'm honestly not looking for "best", this is a road car that I might do a DE event in at the most. The only reason I'm even looking at options outside of just buying an AOT (or, maybe AOR) transaxle is that they're pretty hard to find these days.

The 968 LSD is shared with other Porsche and Audi models, but it doesn't fit in the 5 speed 951, 944, 924 gearboxes. M-Factory makes an affordable LSD for our cars.

Also, thanks for the lead on the M-Factory unit - unless I'm mistaken, theirs is a helical/Torsion LSD. I was hoping for a clutch type but, I suppose that's based entirely on knowing what a clutch type feels like and not having any direct experience with a Torsion. Also knowing that a Torsion is effectively open when unloaded - maybe this doesn't matter in practical application though, I don't know..

You're absolutely right. The 968 transaxle is Audi 01E compatible.
