It’s just butyl tape. Same stuff that the tail lights use to seal to the body. Around where I live, you can get it at autozone. Honestly I’m not sure. When I removed mine, it didn’t seem like it was the same stuff. When I removed my tail lights, it was still pliable and tacky. That’s the stuff I used too. It’s exactly the same as what was in my car and my box lid had never been off before.

Looks like the car is falling apart with rust, right? That's what I thought too. But then...

Tada! Gone. Years ago I had a really badly rusted battery tray and I had to get some serious repair work done there. The guy did some kind of media blasting. I'm not sure what he used, but it looks like a lot of it accumulated behind the blower and eventually turned into that rust colour. But it also hardened into these solid chunks that perfectly mimic a rusty body. A couple of minutes of gentle scraping and vacuuming and it's as clean as a whistle.
Next question: any suggestions for what to use to replace the foam around the evaporator? It looks similar to the stuff used to seal the intercooler. Years ago I replaced that stuff with foam tape, but it would be tricker to do a clean job on this with the same tape. If anyone has done this before, I'd love to know what you used!
