THe odometer quit working. The speedometer works fine and it has a new gear. I was working and then quit then worked for a few miles and then quit again. Anyone have any ideas on where to start?

I had a similar issue years ago. It turned out to be the odometer gear teeth slipping off sideways from the receiving gear. I added a couple of really thin metal shims to the shaft to help keep the gear in place, and it has been functioning well since that.

You are probably going to need to take it apart again and see if one of the wires from the printed circuit board to the motor is broken, or if one of the solder joints has cracked.

I also added a shim after installing a new gear. It would work for a while, then quit. I'd take it apart and see nothing wrong. Then it would work for 1-200 miles and quit again. The shim was the answer for me. over 1k miles and still working.

Is there a way to add power to it while the cluster is out of the car so I can see what is going on?

Yes, but it isn't as easy as just apply power. You need a square wave to drive the motor. @Tom has a thread where he shows running the speedo/ODO on the bench. That was going to be my next move if the spacers didn't work out.
