Shift Rod Removal

Long story short. My shift linkage at the transaxle was ceased up. I took it out and rebuild it. But my mistake was installing it wrong. (shaft from the shifter rod should have been down, but I installed it with it on the top) Needless to say, everything was binding on the frame and I wasn't able to get the linkage assembly back out easily. Lower the transaxle an inch or so, just to I'd have a bit of working room. I got it removed from where it goes into the transaxle, but in trying to get everything apart, it seems I damaged the shaft and or end of the shift rod, as it's just stuck in there and I'm unable to get it out. I think I'm going to have to take the shift rod out to repair it, but not sure what all is involved. I suspect at minimum the transaxle needs to come out. Any insight from the experts?
