Hi everyone,
Just wondering What are those 3 large dowel pins on the "BACK" (NOT between the block & the bell housing) of an early 944 clutch housing or bell housing facing the torque tube ??
Thanks in advance,
E. Fariab

My knee-jerk reaction was that they were alignment pins for the torque tube, but they don't seem to do that... So now this question is going to bug me until we have a good answer...

Hi Tom
Thanks for your immediate response, anyway !
Back in march of 2015 my shop mechanic took the engine out of my '85 944 and this car sat for over 8 years with the engine and the parts stored as best as we could with the hope of someday we get to rebuilding the bottom end .
Well, we closed the shop last year and I'm retired now . So, the just beginning of this moth, I finally decided to finish the engine by myself which has been a challenge plus not being able to find a few of the external parts around the engine that could have been misplace during our move .
I have completed the engine with the new clutch and bell housing all buttoned up and ready to go back in the car !
I have a bit of timing issue here, a family friend is coming tomorrow to help me to put the engine back in the car and it just downed on me what are those mysterious 3 pins on the "BACK" of the clutch housing that actually going in to the hollow torque tube where the clutch shat sticking out and goes through through the back of the housing ??
Could there be another missing part that attaches to the very back of the bell/clutch housing that I'm not aware of ???
Cheers for now,
Essy Fariab

2 thoughts:
- they do serve as a sort of a centering aid as it looks like they sit inside the torque tube itself, so maybe it's for mounting during assembly, prior to bolting things up.
- are they some kind of safety aid, similar to the little wings that were added on the later torque tubes? I was thinking that maybe they're there to "catch" things in case the bolts disconnect (seems like a low likelihood event, and a lot of other things would have gone wrong at that point). Alternatively, would they help with keeping one of the TT bearings away from the bellhousing, if one started to wander?
Obviously, I don't really know, but it's an intriguing question.
Good luck
