Still not legal in California
They're working on it. From Cobb's website regarding the 718:
"Testing with the California Air Resources Board, in order to achieve 50-state compliance, is pending. Once testing is complete with California, and an EO number is issued, this product will be updated to 50-state legal status."

Cobb is giving 10% off through October 31, so the tune is $1395 right now for anyone thinking about this. No code or coupon needed.
I don't think Porsche will ever "approve" Cobb Accessport from a warranty standpoint. They certainly aren't going to ahead of the promotion expiring. But, it looks like an exciting upgrade. The question is, do you buy it and shelve it until you're out of warranty........hmmmm. The likelihood of a tune causing catastrophic failure is extremely low. But, in the event of an issue, the tune will make it MUCH harder to get the warranty service required.
Yeah, I thought of that very thing. Undoubtedly Cobb will run a sale again in the future so I'm not too worried about missing out on the savings, but the warranty issue is huge for my situation since I have a six year factory warranty ( 4 + the extra 2 Porsche gave me for the engine failure). I've reached out to our PCA region president who originally told me that a Cobb tune was the "only one Porsche approves" but haven't heard back from him yet. The numbers are impressive. With the Access port one can "undo" the tune at any time, but I doubt it would remain hidden from the PIWIS.

Direct quote from Cobb tuning when asked if PCNA has approved this or any tune:
“ No... any modification or tuning can void parts of your warranty. In the case of a tune, your engine warranty could be voided by the dealer if they decide to do so... this seems to be on a case by case basis. The rest of the warranty cannot be voided for an unrelated modification.”
DOES INSTALLING A COBB TUNE VOID MY PORSCHE'S WARRANTY?
Whenever you modify your Porsche, you run the risk that you might void your car's warranty. When you take your Porsche to the track, there is a chance that you might suffer an engine failure or some other damage that likewise won't be covered under warranty. Same goes with ECU tuning. Technically, installing a Cobb Tuning ECU tune will void your warranty, however Cobb's off the shelf tunes have proven themselves to be a safe upgrade. Using Cobb Tuning's Accessport, it is very easy to switch between different tunes. You can also uninstall the Cobb Tune with the Accessport, restoring the original factory "tune" or programming, in instances where you need to take your car in for service. The process takes just a few minutes by plugging in your Cobb Accessport to your Porsche's OBDII port.
I would expect PIWIS could pick up the activity of changing tunes on the car. It may not be detectable during routine maintenance or service. However, in the event of catastrophic engine failure, a very thorough investigation would uncover ECU activity that would likely point to the presence of a tune. Again, I've seen a few stock Porsche engines seize or grenade without the presence of any modifications. The most likely scenario is having the tune present, something else happens, and the tune becomes the sacrificial lamb that denies your warranty claim.
I heard from my PCA club president, he says the Porsche backing for Cobb tunes is only for cars/customers bought through Porsche Exclusive, which sounds kind of elitist to me, but I know virtually nothing about Porsche Exclusive. Seems a good lawyer could punch some big holes in a warranty denial based on that, if evidence could be uncovered. He also says the Cobb tune is the one Porsche has extreme confidence in.

I also know nothing about buying “through Porsche Exclusive” other than the Porsche Exclusive options that are available when configuring your car. Everything from extended leather, deviated stitching, etc is designated as Porsche Exclusive. There are around 10 dealerships in the United States designated as Porsche Exclusive Dealerships. South Bay Porsche is one of them and is a 30 minute drive from my home. I’m going to reach out to them with a variety of questions. I’ll ask them about software tunes and Cobb in general.
I'll be interested to know what you learn. I've never totally understood the exclusive manufaktur thing, a couple of options I chose for my 718 are listed that way, quite a few in the configurator are, but my dealer isn't one of the chosen few, so what's the difference? I can find no option for a tune, Cobb or otherwise, but I can see if Porsche sells the tune it would be part if the warranty coverage.
