Haha that's awesome. I remember my first time in Fry's on one of my first trips to the US before I moved here. I had heard of it but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer size of the place. The one that's near me now was in bad shape for the last few years though. I would go there and think, how is this place still going? Almost all the electronics shelves were empty or half empty. Funny thing is, just before they closed up, their website still sucked!

The color in the brake fluid is nice to have so that you know when you've bled enough fluid through, supposing that you switch between the gold and blue every time.

To make the blue you can buy some dye separately and it only take a couple of drops to really tint it. The dye is specially formulated for these fluids, so there's no compatibility issue.

I never really understood that idea. I mean, clearly it can't hold much more than a normal sized bottle (a quart or a litre, whatever they are). If you just put one of those through, it's all fresh. And there's no point in using less than that since once you open the bottle, it'll start to absorb moisture from the air.

Well I just finished up and am happy to report no fuel leaks and solid brakes. What a fiasco overall, starting with the burst fuel line. How often to folks generally change the rubber brake fluid lines to the calipers? Mine looked 'ok' but couldn't help but think it might be wise to replace them...

I did it as soon as I bought my car but I sort of assume that's the "standard" timeline: at the changing of owners' hands, or major systems refreshes. Of course, the lines on my car looked original and likely were. It's probably a good idea to do when/if you rebuild the calipers and just bundle everything together.

Ahhhh, another item to add to my to-do list....flush the brakes!

BTW, the latest Pano's first article in the Tech Q&A is on a soft brake pedal on a 95 911. Long story short, the recommendation was a DOT4 low viscosity fluid, ATE SL6. Perhaps only needed for ABS equipped units.

Anyone know what dye to use?

Late reply, but yes. It's what I use in any street car. I think maybe if you were driving a dedicated racecar you could maybe find the boiling point. I also use it in the clutch, no surprise. When I bled my first 944 I found solid black clutch fluid in it.
It's quite cheap on Amazon too, like $21 a can right now for 1L.
