Once I got it off, I took the old fitting to the vice to see if I could get the remaining tube out, and it simply would not budge. Maybe there's some secret to it, but 5 minutes on google didn't yield anything....

Unfortunately, I cut the pipe such that the new compression fitting sits right next to (or on top of) the little stud that sticks out of the wall for the hold-down clamp. I would have cut it lower, but the hose wasn't long enough. As these compression hoses get older and people start replacing them, I'm thinking those who sell them may need to start making 'one-over' lengths for this situation....

As for covers, I see no real down side personally. Some folks have said they want to 'see' the hose so they can spot leaks sooner, but I dunno. Are you going to spot a leak before it's a leak? Are you going to miss the smell of fuel once it leaks? When/if it leaks, wouldn't you rather channel the fuel into the wheel well away from the exhaust? I'd also note that when you buy replacement lines from Porsche, they ship with an aluminized fiber heat shield/tube now -- so even the factory has decided it's a good idea. Summit Racing has endless heat shield sheathing -- just be sure to get one that will also double as a fuel leak detour tube. :)
This rings true for me - I always told myself it was better to be able to inspect them. But I don't remember the last time I inspected them! They could be about to leak now and I wouldn't know.

Awesome, why not right? I'm mean if you're planning to go, might as well get some new fuel lines out of it.
