Yes, my Nav is self-activated with the SD card method, and I've updated the maps twice. The biggest issue with updating the maps is the download time.
please explain this for those of that are slow....
Detailed instructions are here.

Summary:
Download the installer AIO package (Download Manager recommended)
Extract files to an SD card
Insert SD card into slot SD1, installer will run.
Can take up to 40 minutes with the ignition on, so having a battery charger connected is highly recommended.
Installer will update PCM firmware, enable wired CarPlay and Android Auto, and enable Navigation.
Navigation does require a GPS antenna. Some cars will have one, others won't. It appears that if your car came with Porsche Connect (as mine did), a GPS antenna is part of that. If you don't have an antenna, one can be added.
The Navigation maps will date from the build date of your car, so if your car is older than a year or two, you will want to update the maps as well, which is a separate operation.
Both the NAV and MAP buttons on the PCM will then work. You will not be able to show Nav or Maps in the right side of the gauge cluster, but all else is like factory. (Activating the cluster requires PIWIS or other coding, and a new data cable from the PCM to the cluster. Some early models—2017-18 in particular—do not have the connector port on the cluster for the data cable, so check that prior to buying the cable.)
