Hello, I would like to replace my old 89 951 manual boost controller (MBC) with an Innovate SCG-1 boost controller after discovering a few vacuum and boost leaks. Does anyone with experience with this have any advice? Thanks.

I've never tried the Innovate controller, but tried a number of electronic controllers back in the day and settled on the Profec B (with original big solenoid). The Profec is the closest thing to electronic version of a manual, so very easy to use. From what I can tell, the Innovate has lots of great safety features -- boost cut by AFR and by PSI is very nice -- though programming it looks a little daunting. I tried a couple of boost controllers where you had to program the solenoid's duty cycle directly and I never had the patience to get it just right. If you haven't already, check out the manual to see what's involved....

Untimely response here, but I have an innovate scg1 on my 951. I have it setup with a 38mm dual port Tial wastegate and could not be happier with the setup. Boost control is far more accurate than any manual boost controller, and the AFR and over boost safety settings are a good piece of mind.

@TurboD
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I'm considering the Innovate SCG and have read some people have had issues with the wideband sensor triggering when it shouldn't. Is yours still happy and zooming?

I have a friend who has one newly installed on his 951. He reports having some trouble with it but not sure about the details. One question, though: how do you know that it is pulling boost due to the wideband reading? I'm just wondering how you established the cause and effect. I don't think it logs data, so I'm guessing there is something on the display?

Thats me...ended up bringing the car to my tuner. We were troubleshooting the boost controller. Ended up being that the O2 sensor is malfunctioning. My tuner said that he has experienced issues like this with the Innovate SCG-1 before. What happens is the O2 sensor has a pre-heat function and tends to burn out the sensor as its constantly running. We hooked the controller up to the laptop and there is a function in the program from Innovate that you can turn off the AFR. Once we did that I was properly making boost over the wastegate spring. Haven't driven the car much since we did that last week. But the drive home from the tuner was a lot more fun.

I'm not concerned right now with not having my AFR readings. I can always order another sensor and turn it back on, but for how little I drive the car currently and I only have a custom chip tune instead of standalone, I don't really care that I don't have it.

I had one on my 86 turbo with a dual port wastegate. Install and setup was pretty straightforward, the biggest negative was the wiring bundle was pretty thick running into the cabin and up to the A pillar gauge pod

It definitely took some time to get the correct settings to achieve the PSI I wanted, but once I had it set up, it worked great.

The big reason I went with it was the integrated overboost and AFR cutoffs. Those were both easy to set up and helped a lot as I was dialing in the boost settings

Good to know you can turn it off if it's a problem. I think that's the main issue I've read about, the O2 sensor acting up. Though having access to wideband is part of the draw to this product, so I'll have to think about it.

Thanks for the update!

Yeah, wish I could have AFR, but I don't necessarily need it since i'm not running a standalone yet. Plus i'm working on a 5cyl swap for the future of the car and we will just figure that stuff out later.
