I just received my rebuilt rack, and I noticed some clear fluid leaking from the plastic stoppers they use to cover the ports. I called the shop, and they said their machine only uses power steering fluid throughout the process, and they recommended I flush and refill the rack with the appropriate ATF fluid. I don’t have the slightest clue how to accomplish this…. And isn’t power steering fluid bad for the seals ???
As you noted, the 944 ZF racks are designed to operate w/Dexron 3 or higher ATF - not PS fluid. That said, I don't think there is any irreparable damage from the small amount used... suggest installing the rack in your car and cycle ATF through it and then replace. You could also replace the PS reservoir (about $30) AFTER you cycle the fresh ATF through the system. If the seals are compromised, it won't take long for them to leak. All this said, I would question the work of this firm as they don't seem familiar with these racks - and there are a number of failure points.
I rebuild the racks and PS pumps, so feel free to drop me a note.

The shop’s advice is correct flush and refill with the proper ATF. Power steering fluid won’t immediately ruin seals, but using the wrong fluid long-term can cause damage. To flush, disconnect the return line, cycle the system with fresh ATF engine off, turning wheel lock-to-lock, then reconnect and fill. If unsure, have a pro handle it.
Yes, using power steering fluid instead of the correct ATF can damage seals over time, as they’re designed for different chemical properties.
To flush and refill:
>Lift the car safely,
>Remove the return line,
>Drain fluid by turning the wheel lock-to-lock,
>Flush with ATF,
>Refill with the correct ATF, and
>Bleed the system.
