A quick update today.

Just got the Boxster back from The Wrap Factory, where the excellent fellows there did a quick PPF job on the rear of the 718. Specifically just aft of the rear wheels. You might not have known it, but there is a high degree of scuffing that happens back there with dirt and debris kicked up by the massive rear tires.

Last year we had DIY'd putting pre-cut protective film on the GTS Chronicles Cayman, and it had turned out well, even if wrapping the edges was a bit of a pain in the butt. Surface preparation is key, and we had done a good job cleaning, polishing and touching up the surfaces before we applied the film. More than a year later, it's holding well and doing the job it's supposed to do.

Unfortunately, we never got back around to doing the Boxster in the same manner, and I put another summer's worth of driving on it before finally getting around to it. Wish I'd made it a priority before, as there was quite a bit of 'rash' that needed addressing. Thankfully I have the right tools and expertise needed - although a bigger garage with a QuickJack IS something to aspire to.

Working late into the night (because, you know, I left it to the last minute!), I tackled the rash. After many, many passes with the polisher, and several different compounds, I got the surface to an acceptable point so that the guys could do their work. The right side was noticeably more affected than the left - bet the opposite is true for British and Australian cars...

Today I braved the early-morning Ottawa commuting traffic (it sucks!) and headed to the opposite side of town to deliver and wait. There, a pleasant surprise!

What took us several hours to do on the Cayman took them less than one on the Boxster! All those years of expertise counting for a lot! I hadn't even finished my coffee down the road when I got the call saying it was ready to go and that it would be cured by the time I walked back to the shop.

A quick chat, examination and check over of the other PPF'd areas (which they touched up nicely) and I was on my way. Can't say enough about the customer experience, especially as compared to other automotive shops in the area (I'm looking at you Mark Motors). I'd recommend these guys to anyone wholeheartedly.

Anyway, not before time, 'Red' is now properly protected back there and I can feel good about continuing the road adventures.

Onwards!

Road rash for those who track their Porsches is definitely an area that should be addressed since many drivers will be using a set of sticky rubber when they go play. Many folks think to do the front end, yet fail to do the doors or undersides as you noted. The doors get peppered when the car is in severe turns and debris can also be thrown on the wide little hips of the rear wheel wells. So do those areas and key post to make sure folks do the underside areas from behind the front wheels all the way behind the rear wheels --- thanks for noting the importance of this lukesward!

Absolutely. I neglected to mention that The Wrap Factory had already done my rocker panels aft of the front wheels, all the way back to the rears, and up and around the intakes (the sexy flared areas) up to the cut line on the body. That PPF is holding up very nicely indeed, and IMHO a must for anyone, even non-track users, who want to keep their paint blemish-reduced.
