Just wanted to share my latest creation with everyone The 3d printed cupholder options I've seen have all tried to use the ashtray space as a cupholder which I tried and wasn't pleased with how secure they were and also some made shifting awkward so I I decided to make my own solution.
This solves the problem of lack of cupholders and also acts a front door speaker spacer to allow the use of a wider range of aftermarket speakers. This design is also completely reversible utilizing the stock speaker screw holes to secure it in place and requires no drilling of new holes.
To install: I recommend ABS, ASA as PLA and PETG will soften and melt in a hot car, you MIGHT be able to get by using PETG if your car is never parked out in the sun very long and is garaged. As for the cover spacers I recommend printing those in TPU-95A but whatever you decide to print the main part with will work as well. This includes parts for both the driver and passenger sides. I recommend printing standing up as printing it laying flat could cause some cosmetic imperfections from having to use supports on the cupholder section. Longer screws may be needed to fit. If any questions just ask.
Credit to MijnZeezicht on thingiverse who was the one who designed the speaker spacer, I modified it by adding the cupholder portion which I designed.
**Updated 07/06/2024**
I have updated my cupholder design to be much easier to print and use far less supports and less material. The new design will require 2 M8 x 12mm Countersunk screws to attach the cupholder to the speaker spacer piece. I got mine on amazon for about $8. Print both the Passengers side and Drivers side, then print 2 of the cupholder files and screw them together. I have found if you print at 0.2 resolution you will need to chase the threads with a tap to for the screws to grab properly, alternatively you can print at 0.1 resolution and you shouldn't need the tap but printing will take significantly longer.

Love it! Thanks for posting it here!
This is weird, I was working on almost the exact same thing this weekend! Based on a different spacer (the one I modeled my speaker grill around). I originally modeled the actual cup holder I used to clip onto the pocket, but I kept crashing my leg into it. So I was brainstorming a way to move it up and settled on updating the spacer.

This is awesome! I wonder if it will work in an early 944?
I have a 3D printer but it's finicky and I don't trust it to be able to handle a job like this. Any recs for businesses that will 3D print on demand?

Thats awesome! I really like your design. Mine is pretty simple since Im new to CAD, Im mostly using tinker cad right now but trying to learn fusion 360 to be able to design more things. Id really like to design an airbox lid for the 951 since the new ones from the dealership are so priceyyugami wrote: Tue May 28, 2024 6:41 am This is weird, I was working on almost the exact same thing this weekend! 3d printing in general is finicky. Having a good printer certainly helps but even with a good one its a challenge as each filament you use is different and will require different settings and on top of that each model is different and may require tweaks to get it perfect, Im a bit OCD so I try to get my prints as perfect as possible.idealcheese wrote: Tue May 28, 2024 7:05 am This is awesome! As far as a service I dont know of any off hand but I have seen people post on facebook marketplace advertising they do 3d printing as a service you may want to check there. If you go that route though make sure they use ABS, Nylon, or ASA as the filament material cause if not there is a chance it will melt or soften and deform if left in a hot car. Those materials are more difficult to print with but you have to use them to get good heat resistance.
If you cant find anyone I may be able to help you but it may a be a bit as I have several people that asked me to make some for them and each one of these takes me like 7 hours to print.

Model has been updated to use less supports when printing.
