Are rear view mirrors serviceable?
My '86 951 has a rear view mirror that is very floppy. Even the tab that converts it to day/night is loose. My guess is something became unattached inside the housing. I'd love to disassemble it and fix it if that's possible. I thought about cutting the back open in order to gain access to the inner workings, but figured I'd ask the question first.

I've been able to get the day/night tab re-located w/o disassembly. Don't remember what I did though. I think it involved a screwdriver and some gentle prying. I also removed the mirror from the windshield first.

Mine started rattling (years ago) and, after fussing with it forever, I finally just got a new one from the dealer. Not sure if they are still available, but the new one was weirdly satisfying.
mine doesn't really rattle, it just has excessive movement before it actually starts moving in the pivot thingy if that makes any sense at all... I will probably take it off the windshield and see what I can see with a small screwdriver like usury said. In my research I've also found posts of people who have injected The Right Stuff aerosol expanding foam inside the mirror housing too and reported that they had decent success with that. I'm guessing that might render the day/night flipper useless but that would probably be an improvement at least.
usury, you were onto something! I pulled my mirror off the windshield and brought it inside to have a look at it. I found out that if I set the mirror facing down and pull up on the mounting arm and simultaneously move the day/night lever from the rear position towards the front of the mirror, the inside parts seem to lock into place and it isn't floppy anymore. I can adjust it and it is nice and firm. As soon as I flip the lever towards the back, it goes into floppy mode again. I would really love to see the inside of one of these. Tom, would you consider taking your old mirror apart and posting pictures of the innards if you still have it?
