Need a Porsche historian

I am wondering when the 356 was first introduced to the US.
Sometime in the 50's we were at my uncle's house and a guy pulled up in a car that I later learned was a Porsche. It turned out that the guy was my dad's and uncle's cousin Clyde. We got in the car and went for a short ride, Clyde and my uncle in the front seats, and my cousin and myself in the back seat. It could not have been later than 1959, and the 356 had a back seat. What model year was it?
BTW my 911 is supposed to arrive at the dealer the end of October, and that day 65 years ago is the only time I have ever ridden in (never driven) a Porsche.

Thank you very much. the car I rode in was a coupe, not a cabriolet, so it wasn't the first, but you got me started.
