Tire/Wheel Change Question - 991.2
Ok - this seems like a dumb question but I just went through removal of my front wheels to access and remove the liners and then front bumper to install the radiator grills on my 991.2. I am thinking there must be a trick related to re-installing the wheels. I did get them on but the front wheels don’t lock in place when in gear and brake is on - they just spin. This makes it a pain to re-install the wheels. (This is a manual). Anyone have a trick to make this less of a pain. I did get them back on and the install of the grills went fine - just wanting to know for the future when I need to swap my brake pads.

A torque wrench eliminates that issue. Purists will tell you not to use a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts, but it's an extremely common practice at shops. I prefer not to use an impact gun myself, primarily because they often put marks in the lug nuts, and make them look old and beat up. What I do in that situation is cinch down the lug nuts in a star pattern by spinning the tire backwards with the wrench on the lug nut. By spinning the tire backwards, you can cinch it tighter then trying to hold the wheel etc. Once all lug nuts are on that way, and the wheel is 100% settled on the hub, I lower the car and torque to spec using a torque wrench (star pattern). Always a good idea to drive a few miles and re-check to torque too, as the wheel will settle in place as you drive. Most shops don't have the luxury of re-checking in a day or two, but they make up for that by over-torquing in the first place with a big impact gun....

Why do you need the front wheels to lock in place? To torque down the bolts? After I mount the wheel, I usually hold it in place with one hand and tighten the bolts with the other as much as I can. Then once I lower the car back down, I torque down the bolts without the wheels spinning.

I have never used one of these studs before. Do you buy 4, one for all wheels or do you just move it around?audi4t wrote: Mon Aug 08, 2022 8:33 am I have this gizmo

You just need one to hang the tire on and then move on to the next wheel once the first is mounted. I also keep one in the car, for what exact reason I don't know...Pcarnut wrote: Mon Nov 28, 2022 6:24 pmI have never used one of these studs before. Well, not so fast. I refuse to pay $16.50 for shipping of a $14.25 part! I’ll look around.Pcarnut wrote: Mon Nov 28, 2022 7:53 pmThank you. Amazon. Very high quality. A pair in the pack. Free shipping. It's what I have in addition to a third one that I got a few years ago.Pcarnut wrote: Mon Nov 28, 2022 7:55 pmWell, not so fast.
