Hello! New member from Northern Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦

I’ve recently been passed down a family heirloom, a 1984 Porsche 944 - Alpine white, black leather interior, 15" fusch rims (painted white). Square dash.
Car was purchased new in 84 by my dad, then my mum took ownership shortly afterwards, naming her "Sweatpea". Parents separated and mum left to her homeland and sweatpea went on a boat to England in early 2000’s making its way back to Canada around 2014 - then it sat in a semi covered underground garage. Hasn’t run in the last 5-6 years and my mum them passed it on to me, with a promise I’d keep it in the family.
I towed her home and aptly renamed her "wicke" which is just German for sweatpea reminiscent of its birth name , but a more manly or wicked name. 😎

All fluids, plugs, wires, and filters were changed, a new battery then drained stank old fuel, and new filter installed. Still no start, found good info online at various sites (here, before signing up), changed dme relay and she came to life.

It’s still a rough idle when cold so something is not right. Runs great when warmed up though.

Rattle when slowing down in gear, so suspecting bearings (torque tube)??

Sunroof doesn’t open - has small issues, broken follower and cable

purchased speed and reference sensor (bought during the no start phase), and all new belts - not changed out yet

She’s pretty much all original, no aftermarket dodads, just an alpine 6 disc changer and alarm.

Some rocker rust, behind the doors, which I hope to cut out and repair soon.

Can’t wait to learn all about the 944 and glad to be a part of a friendly Porsche (no snob) community !

-dan

Welcome! Looks great, and looks like you're ready to catch up on the maintenance stuff. Why the ATF? Love that rear lower skirt. How many km? I used to visit friends outside of Edmonton 2 to three times a year until covid. I miss CA, especially the road trip up, eh?

Thanks! Ya it’s had good service most of its life, but the last few years lacking for sure. Everything I’ve taken off has been OEM Porsche stuff, some a lot more brittle than others lol.
I’d say it’s over 240k on the car. Have all the receipts, just haven’t gone through them all. Porsche replaced the motor or top end, probably due to a failed timing belt. Believe the transaxle was replaced through porsche in the early 80’s also.
The drive into the mountains is only 1hr so lots of twisty roads around 😎

ATF was for a power steering flush. Seems to be what was recommended.

Welcome aboard, and best of luck with the car.
You have found a great place for 944 owners.

Rough when cold.. as in hesitation?

I cured this by servicing the AFM.. basically, you open it carefully, clean the contacts, and bend the arm to track a new line.

This was life changing! Thanks for the tip. I pop the cover off cleaned things up and spun it CCW two notches. Runs great now!!!
