MAF Screen Replacement

Hi all, just a quick couple of pictures on a tiny project I did yesterday.

For a long time I was under the impression that refreshing my MAF would require a full rebuild and that since it was a primarily cosmetic issue, that I would wait until I needed it. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn that you can get replacement screens for the MAF. Getting the old one off took a bit of figuring out. What ultimately worked was putting the hook end of a 90 degree pick between the retaining ring and the lower part of the groove it sits in. But what I mean is not putting the pointy part in, but rather the long axis of the small end of the pick. I hope that makes sense. That popped the retaining ring out and then everything was easy.

My first reaction --admittedly from my juvenile hot-rodding inner child -- was to think you'd flow a little more without it and that is was pointless since nothing it might stop could get past the air filter. Then I googled and found the video below, which pretty much says it all. And now I'm wondering a good screen might help straighten out the flow on aftermarket 944 Turbo MAF's, which are fairly notorious for being affected by turbulence from the turbo impeller. At any rate, here's an interesting video I found....

Somewhat interestingly, there were very small little bits of leaf (?) that were between the 2 screens. I don't think that it's from my ownership so it's impossible to say where it came from but there are instances where you might want to run the car with the filter off (just for testing certain things, like the MAF itself), so it's probably reasonable insurance.

I hope later in this car's time with me to convert everything over to a MAP system, with an aftermarket ECU to be able to move to sequential ignition and injection, and maybe simplify some of the damping that is required by the batch system the car came with. Maybe also move to coil on/near plug and remove the distributors.

MAFs..meh I say.
