Hi all,

just wanted your opinion here. My manual transmission Boxster GTS 4.0 has approx. 4000 km (2485 miles) & switching from 1st to 2nd is not always smooth. It happened to me maybe less than 10 times overall… sometimes the second gear engagement does not go smoothly and a « grinding » noises occured.

I’m not pushing the car at all (doing my shift between approx. 3000-4000 rpm). I tried shifting quickly or slowly (to see if it made a difference) making sure the clutch pedal is fully pressed down before any shifter movement and no, it’s really random. Have you experienced something similar with your cars? Is it because the car is new and will get better in time? Issue with the syncros? All my other gears are going in smoothly… it’s just that 2nd gear that can be tricky to engage (not often, but enough to make me worry). Any thoughts?

I don’t think there’s any real answer at this point, but it’s common. Whether it’s a problem with the car has been debated endlessly. Here’s my experience. I’ve had two grinds in 10,000+ miles, the last grind coming ~6,000 miles ago. I can attribute both of my grinds to user error. I do believe this problem varies from car to car, but nothing yet official from Porsche AFAIK.

Zero grinds on my 2019 718 6 mt. Something does not seem right.

There are hundreds of posts on this topic in another forum and it happens a lot! I have had my share of them as well in my '21 Spyder and Porsche has a tech. instruction (TI SY167/21) on it but they are not admitting anything is wrong.

Thank you for the information. I noticed it tends to happen more when engine/transmission is cold. I’ll continue to shift slowly from 1st to 2nd until I speak to my Porsche SA.

Try double declutching when going into 2nd and the trans is still warming up. That seemed to have solved any 2nd gear weirdness in my 981

Happened to me twice when driving slowly.
No issue when accelerating rapidly.
Figured I was being lazy with the clutch.
Interesting to find out there are others.
Hasn’t happened again since I’ve focused on clutch to the floor even when driving leisurely.
Car is 2022 BGTS 4.0 6 speed with 3000 miles.
Planning to install short shifter.
Should I expect any change - better or worse?
All feedback appreciated.
Thanks!

Is grinding only happening on 4.0 GTS manual transmission cars? Or are some 2.5 manual transmissions also grinding?
