Cobb Tuning for the 4.0 engined cars

Over on RL there is a discussion about the upcoming Cobb tune to be available for the GT4/GTS 4.0 cars, with contributions by the folks from Cobb. For us GTS owners the good news is that it should bring our power output up even with the GT4 and both will receive a significant bump over stock. Numbers as much as 50+ HP for the GTS are being discussed, which for a NA engine are most impressive. This is with stock intake/exhaust in place and will be totally legal in all 50 states.

I've wondered all along about this coming to pass, since Porsche has stated that there are no mechanical differences between the GTS and GT4 engines, just in the software tuning and the redline. The Cobb tune will also raise the GTS redline to 8000 rpm like the GT4. Release is uncertain depending on when the various government agencies pass off on it, but they hope for late summer.

I have lately been tremendously impressed with the performance of my GTS since the installation of the new engine (oil pump failure last August) once I got it broken in, maybe its my advanced age (73) but the acceleration sometimes is almost scary to me. I've recently been able to run through the gears on a deserted interstate and time to 140 mph is really swift. Adding 40-50 more hp would probably increase my anxiety a bit as well! I'm not sure I'll purchase this, but its nice to know it will be out there. I know Softronics has a similar tune already out but I've not read any reports of it in real time (I'd like to). So if anyone has theirs, or knows of someone who does, please post some results.

I have no dog in this hunt, no affiliation with Cobb, I did buy their tune for my 981 GTS but it only bumped the output by about 10 HP at the upper reaches of the rev band.

Cobb seems to be leading the field these days with there accessport, etc. I waffle back and forth on whether to seek a tune on my turbo. I probably won't do it while under warranty, and like you the car is already scary fast, so I dunno. But can you ever really have too much hp? :) Tell the Cobb guys to join us over here too. Smaller audience, but at a cost of zero, we're still cheaper per member than RL. :)

Tom, I'm with you. I think, " this car is plenty fast." But then...like you say, how much is enough? Then the old hot rodder in me tries to take over. I probably mostly wasted my money on the 981 tune, but 40-50 HP is not a trifle! Bragging rights alone might convince me to do it, but like you, I tend to want to wait until the warranty is gone, which for me is 2027 since I got the two extra years for the oil pump failure issue. Yikes! I'll be 79 then!

RL had a post today from M Engineering about their support for Porsche in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb races and a link to their site and the tune available for the 4.0 718's. Their price is considerable more than Softronics and the anticipated Cobb tune, but they arguable offer more.

We gotta get them to post over here on Carpokes.

I am considering Cobb, but am most interested in the offering from FVD Brombacher. Their software engineers have been writing software code for Porsche since 1984. They are trained by Bosch and Siemens in Germany, so you receive their factory expertise in writing software code for Porsche. Most importantly, their software engineers are committed to software tuning for PORSCHE ONLY, so their sole purpose is to write the most polished Porsche software available in the industry.

I forgot all about them, I haven't even looked into what they offer. Yes FVD is a well respected tuner also.

My only hesitation is warranty. And, thanks to my wife, I have an additional 4 year or 100,000 mile Porsche factory warranty that she purchased. Tough decision.

Yeah, the warranty issue is holding me back too. My PCA prez says that Cobb will be approved by Porsche. His SIL works for them so maybe he has the straight story.

Bill, please let us know if you learn more about Porsche supporting the Cobb tune. F Y I.....I also owned an '86 944 Turbo. After owning for 6 years it caught fire while I was driving it and burned, total loss. State Farm thinks a fuel line burst and sprayed the hot turbo charger with fuel, causing the fire. I miss that car.

Yea, my 944 turbo was a special car too. I'll keep you posted.
