So, I got to wondering if the rubber grommet at the end of the intake is supposed to rest against the fender, or is the lip supposed to be tucked into the fender. I really don't know, but perhaps someone here does.

At least on the turbo, they have a little lip/channel that straddles the sheet metal -- much like a grommet would. So it's not on one side of the other but rather on both sides at once, loosely holding onto the sheet metal. Cant say for sure the n/a is the same, but would be surprised if it's any different.

Thanks Tom. I'm not where my car is right now, so I'll take a look when I get back to her. My recollection is that there is a lip on the inside, but I don't remember forcing the other lip inside when I checked the belt tension a few months ago.

Yeah, the setup is the same for the N/A. The smaller inner lip rests in the channel around the plastic intake duct and the larger outer lip sits on the other side of the sheet metal panel.

It can be a pain to push the grommet through to where it sits correctly, which is probably why I find them mounted incorrectly about half the time.
