I’m wondering what people are doing with the 40 plus year old Space Saver Spare tire in our 944’s Should I just trash it?? Or are there any other options?? Working on cleaning up the rear hatch area and thinking about getting rid of that ugly hump where the spare sticks up through the carpet… Thoughts and pictures would be GREAT!!!! Rear Seat Delete is coming along SPECTACULARLY I will post some pictures as soon as the back piece comes back from being recovered…

Depends on your goals for the car... I've been working to keep mine relatively original in appearance, so the space saver is still just sitting back there with the tool kit. I do see them commonly deleted on track/race builds to save weight though.

Getting rid of the cargo carpeting hump is an interesting idea. I'd like to see that well-executed. OEM space savers are actively selling on eBay for between $125-$300 depending on condition, so at the very least I'd try to get a few bucks for it.

NCR944, I DO follow your channel on YouTube and I MAY just keep it considering I am the ORIGINAL owner, I too have the Tool Kit, Jack, Air Compressor, First Aid Kit, along with the German gloves to keep your hands clean.. I wanted to post this SAME kinda question about the Fire Extinguisher that’s located on the passenger footwell by the ECU?? Didn’t know if it would be any good since the age of these cars… Thanks for the advice and KEEP up the GREAT work, Good to know you are HERE…

Another option is to get an EU-market carpet and put a proper, inflated spare in. Still an ugly hump, but at least the spare is useable.

I use mine to hold this gate open. The weight and grip of the 40-year-old rubber work way better than the broken flower pot I previously used. And yes, I really do.

I pulled mine out a couple of years ago and had a real good look at it. Mine looked absolutely fine, though the car has had a sheltered life and other people's spares might not be in such good condition. I figured worst case, I'd swap to it, drive slow, and if it also goes bad, I'd just be that much closer to my destination when the tow truck arrives.

ALL GREAT options guys, I’ve NEVER actually HAD a flat tire on the road, I’ve found low air pressure and saw nails on the tread but was ALWAYS able to get it taken care of at home, I MAY as well leave it in the well, I mean it SEEMS to still LOOK okay. And I DO like the idea that using it one day MAY actually get me home…Tom that IS a GREAT functional gate stopper with some nice appeal..

I agree you should keep it. It is old but that doesn't mean that it is useless. If you get a blowout and need to drive 5 miles to a service area or to a tire shop, there is a good chance the old spare can get you there.

I was looking at these a few years ago and think you can still find space saver wheels for sale new from Porsche.

I am TOTALLY convinced about keeping my Spacesaver spare, After all it IS meant for the 944, And trying to figure out an alternative MAY lead to additional issues…. It’s been in there all these years with ALL the factory components. Jack, Compressor, Tool Kit First Aid Kit…. The Verdict is in!!!!!

Yes it's the turbo version, but it only looks fancy because those are majestic oak tree leaves in it.
