I got this letter yesterday. I think I'll pass, but it sure let's you know where the state stands on older cars. The amusing part is they only want to crush your car if it passes smog. :wtf:

If the goal is to rid the area of older cars and if they are concerned that they are presumably polluting , why do they care if a vehicle has passed CA emissions or not since they're going to dismantle them?

Maybe there are concerns regarding left over unburned hydrocarbon particles bouncing around the internals or other dastardly demons in those old parts. 🤣

edit: I know the answer.

The only thing I can figure is that they don't need to pay to keep the un-smoggable cars off the road -- just pull them over for lack of registration, impound them, and collect the fines. They go from spending $2k to probably making that much...

If they'd give $2k per, I'd be buying a tow truck and I'd go to town aka 1984's wonderful black comedy "Repo Man" starring Emilio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton and a few other character jewels!

That's it. Junk yards, hidden alleyways, old garages, etc, would be emptied overnight! Non-running cars and trucks would be being brought in from all over the state!

My feeble memory of prior similar efforts in the L.A. basin included $400 then later $600 compensation for the effort. Considering the time passed, let's see, maybe double that with inflation, then 75% less due to program underfunding, add administrative fees and local taxes, carry the four... not much left.

In the old programs, there was no stipulation regarding passing the emissions tests. The target was removal of non-compliant vehicles, and also older cars that were never compliant with the more contemporary standards. Looking at carburetor cars, and maybe catless cars from pre-'72.

In the notice the OP shares, there's a forgiveness request if you car is a classic or otherwise valuable to you. So you need only even consider the request if you no longer want your car. Gotta stay PC. and don't risk offending folks forced to drive clunkers by their personal economic situations.
