After your rebuilding process, how much if any does the drive shaft move back and forth in the tube? I have never been clear on how much is normal and how much is old age...

The shaft will Traverse with an easy blow of the rubber mallet. But that does not determine if the Torque Tube is ready to be rebuilt. The reason for the shaft to be able to traverse in the tube is to accommodate any stacking dimension that occurs starting at the flywheel and the coupler at the transaxle connection. The Torque Tube bearings are usually ready for replacement between the 120,000 mile mark and the 130,000 mile mark. Some have experienced them as early as 80,000 miles.
