Wheels and Tires

After a year and half (15,000 miles) on the stock 20" Hankook A/S tires, I put some Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV tires on the stock rims. In addition to the expected huge boost in winter traction, I was surprised by less noise and smoother ride. I am very, very happy with the new tires.

For summer, my plan is to get 21" wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport tires, but there's an interesting wrinkle. Porsche sells the wheels I want, the Exclusive wheels (what most people seem to option their with) with Pirelli P Zero tires. If I want just the wheels without tires, they want $1000 _more_ than the wheel & tire package.

So, unless anybody has a better suggestion, I think I'll go ahead and get the package and see how I like the Pirellis. Watch this space for me to sell a barely used set of P-Zeros sometime in June :-)

@RonaTD

We also have the Michelin Alpin 5 SUV winters on a second set of wheels. I concur with your assessment - they are excellent tires!

Follow-up on the Pirelli Zero summer tires. I had some fun on Angeles Crest Highway this morning and never ran anywhere close to running out of grip, not even a groan or a squeal. Not that I was trying to find the limit, but I was pushing it pretty hard.

Hard to say for sure, but so far it appears they are less energy efficient than the previous tires. Don't know how much is the tread/compound or how much is that they are wider.
