What makes these specific to 87 and newer? Why would these not fit on an 86 951?

The dimensions of the steering knuckle and spacing between the strut/knuckle mounting bolts changed for the 87 model year. The strut/knuckle mounting flange is 18mm wide with 63mm bolt spacing center to center.

On second thought, since these use inserts on the front, it's possible to do a cut-a-strut conversion and swap the front Koni cartridges into your existing strut housings. Everything else is compatible.

The easy way to see the difference is to look at the mounting tab for the brake hose, which also changed when the strut/knuckle was updated for the 87 model year. Here's 2 pics.
The first pic shows the early strut with a horizontal brake hose mounting tab. see the yellow arrow.

Then in 87 the strut was updated along with an updated knuckle, the mounting tab is nearly vertical.
