It looks like it may be possible to replace the balance shaft bearing case sleeve. Circled in red in picture. They are still available… Now, anyone know how the heck to do it ????

I'll see if I can take some pictures this weekend. They are a press fit. Ideally you press the old ones out and install the new ones on a hydraulic or arbor press with the proper sized drift. But it's also possible to get them out with a strategically sized socket, with a hammer, vice, or nut and bolt arrangement.

There was also a factory tool, 9210, to press out the bearing, but I haven't seen those available anywhere in years. And I'm suddenly wandering it a 3D printed tool would work? Certainly less risk of damaging the carrier....

Do these sleeves freeze (like dry-ice 'freeze') to slide back in? I don't have any 944 balance-shaft experience, And actually wonder why you'd need to replace a sleeve that looks like it carries a bearing inside. Regardless, getting steel to fit tight in cast or bored holes in aluminum is often easier if the insert is a cold slip-fit, so saves some galling of the aluminum hole at least on the way in.

Curious more than anything else.

The parts circled are the actual bearings for the front of the shaft. They are a friction fit. The FSM manual says just to press them in and out with tool 9210, with no mention of heating/freezing, but yes if you freeze the bearing and heat the carrier, they will slide right in. The tool is nice because it has a lip that ensures installing to the right depth, but it's easier to find Big Foot than one of those tools these days.

My reason for asking is because I bought a replacement bearing case on ebay, and the sleeve was just a little chewed up on the very end. I don't know if it'll be a problem or not, but I figured if I can replace it without too much trouble, I might as well.

Yes, I'd replace that! Someone tried to remove it and failed. I'd press is out from the other direction so you don't drag high spots through the bore. I can do a video on the R&R process tomorrow if helpful.

Ok, it's on the list...

This is a good walkthrough that I used when doing this job. It doesnt really walk through that specific internal sleeve replacement, but guessing perhaps it could be pressed out from the housing fairly easily with the proper tools/press.
