My 991, has 43000 miles, no codes, all services up to date. Has "enter and drive system", steering wheel does not lock.
BEGS QUESTION: DOES THE CAR HAVE A STEERING WHEEL LOCK INTEGRAL?
I have asked shops, and looked on line, no straight answer, does not matter if dummy key removed, car dark and locked security system enabled.

Regarding your integral steering lock question, yes. But since Porsche's Entry and Drive system automatically unlocks the steering column along with other programmed entry functions when the key is present and does the opposite when the key is removed a distance and/or the car is locked, I don't know how you'd test it.

I imagine the function is likely similar across most other modern vehicle makes that have similar systems that don't require the physical insertion of a chipped key into an ignition switch to unlock the column and start the car. It's all near-field electronics now.

For what it's worth, the steering lock function on our Porsches all operate the same way. If the car is unlocked (or not locked in the first place) the steering moves freely.

Maybe others here will have a better take on this but I'd say If no PCM alerts regarding a failure in the system (ie: a "Steering Lock Fault" message or similar), then I'd say you're fine.

Test by rolling the driver's window down, close the door, lock the car, place the key next to the fruit basket on the kitchen counter, wander back to the car sans key, and test to see if the steering wheel is locked via the open window.

I can test my alarm by unlocking the door through that open window and lifting the handle. Avoid the surprise...

I'm looking for something from Porche itself, but I'm not sure the 991 or 992 have steering column locks. Most cars have them as part of an anti-theft regulatory requirement, but car mfg's can get a waiver if the car has sufficient other anti-theft measures, which I think is the case here.

Edit: I'm not saying it does not have a steering column locks, or that it does, just that I can't find a clear answer (which I guess is why the question was asked )

I think you are correct Tom. We learn everyday!

I just now attempted the 'window down' test on a 992 and a 718 - neither car's steering locked. Maybe it's not definitive but it certainly seems so and, in any case, is a good indication to me that it is.

Awesome guys, that is very helpful stuff, I am gonna stop worrying about a malfunction in this regard. Much appreciated
