Hi guys.
I’ve just changed the 4 front seals on my 1984 944 auto. I’ve put everything back together, spun the engine numerous times rechecked the timing and started it up. At first it was fine but as the car warms up the engine gets noisier, as if something is clashing.
I’ve left it over night and gone away to check my settings. This morning I’ve gone out and again removed the spark plug and spun it by hand (no noises) and checked my settings, below are 4 pictures of what I saw. I could find the lower flywheel/crank marking.
The only thing I can think of is when doing the balance shaft seals, when I removed the housing both shafts moved forward around 50mm is this normal?

What could be causing the noise?

The components appear to be positioned correctly. It is possible that a roller / tensioner bearing is responsible for the sound.

There was no noise before the seal change.
The noise gets a lot louder as the car warms up and if I lightly rev the car it’s horrendous.
It seems to come from the rear of the car, could it be something to do with the balance shaft other than timing.

trying to work this noise out.
is it possible to run the engine without the balance shaft belt?
If how will the engine react?

Yes you can run the engine without the balance belt.
The eccentric pulley in the middle of the first pic can be tricky to position correctly. If it's too low it will rub on the belt below it.

How did you tension the timing and balance shaft belts? Maybe post a video so we can hear the sound. I'm wondering if the belt is slapping on the cover, which can happen if the belt is too loose.

I don’t have a tool to tension the belt, I followed edredas YouTube videos while I wait for the tool is being printed.
To be honest I really don’t want to start the engine in that condition, I thought I’d screwed it up big time.
I’ve spent my evening (at work) watching video and listening to engine noises experienced by others and the two areas I think I need to investigate. Firstly the tension I have on the timing belt (I think it’s too tight) and secondly the balance shaft idler possibly touching the belt below.

A tight balance shaft belt will cause a whirring sound and a lose timing belt can cause it to slap on the cover. Did you also listen to some videos of clattering lifters? They can go dry if it took a long time to do the job or if the front crank pully is not straight and torqued to 155 ft lbs. Dry lifters kind of makes the car sound like a diesel engine. Did you notice if you had oil pressure when the engine was running? Do all the accessory belts look straight and free to turn?

I think I'd be using an automotive stethoscope to help locate the noise.

Morning,
Against my better judgment I decided to video the car this morning but the car had other thoughts. I put the distributor cap, spark plugs and air box all back on but now it won’t start. It did the same Sunday evening so I changed the plug leads and it fired up straight away. I’ve checked for a spark and it’s present but the plugs aren’t wet with fuel and I can’t hear the fuel pump working so think the problem is fuel starvation.
Is there any obvious reason the pump isn’t running after the work I’ve done?

Looking at the belts this morning the timing belt looks good but I’ll double check when I get the carpokes 3D tool printed. After watching a multitude of YouTube videos last night I think the balance belt is too tight and I will adjust it down. But first I need to figure out either what I’ve disturbed or what’s packed up preventing me get fuel to the engine… :problem:
These really are the cars that keep giving
