Including the Spyder, GT4, and GT4RS

While I continue to modify my interior with the goal of getting rid of all plastics and shinny silver "metal", I keep coming back to the idea of the air vents. It does not bother me enough to change out the whole air vents, but I have always been curious if it was possible to just pop out the silver/metal ring, and paint it black...

Has anyone attempted to pop them off? I have read on other forums some people were able to just pop them off without having to take off the whole air vent....

Yes, they pop right off! I use a tiny jeweler's screwdriver, like you get in the little eyeglass repair kit in most drug stores, Walmart, etc. Get it between the trim ring and base and work around a little until you see it separating and you can take it off, and when done painting just snap it back in.

I also did the chrome vent center pieces and radion button trim rings. I think there are threads on how to do these here but they are all easy projects. I recently painted my radio trim rings and vent centers Racing Yellow but left the vent outer trim Satin Black (no pics of that yet).

Oh sweet, thanks @Bob Z ! - I am going to give this a try.

Do you have a recommendation on what paint to use?

Also, how did you prep the rings for painting?

I use a Satin Black paint, Krylon paint and primer in one works well but most of the name brand rattle cans should suffice. Give the parts a light sanding first with very fine sandpaper, clean well, and try 4 or so light coats until you get the coverage you want.

@Bob Z when you get a chance please post a photo of the installed painted radio rings. Don’t those pop off easily?

You can see them in the pic I posted but here is one of how they looked painted in the 2019 Targa GTS I had in the past. You have to take the knobs off and take them apart - you will wind up just the chrome ring to paint:

Love the small details. Nice work!

Looks like you might fancy one of Me and Larry's PORSCHE decal for the SIM card cover

Before painting them, I wanted to try wrapping it in some left over carbon vinyl I had…

Not clipped in all the way, just hovering on it
