So I noticed Tom's message in another post that he did a break -in oil change on his 992 Turbo, at 1k miles.

My dealer and owners manual, and the PCM, are telling me no oil change for a year...roughly 15 000 kms!

Manual says drive easy for the first 1000 kms or so as well.

Does anybody have real-world experience on the break-in period? I'm more included to go in after, say 5000 kms to get this done even if it does cost me a bit of $.

I missed this post earlier sorry. Personally, I would not wait that long. When I asked my tech if he thought I was crazy to change it at 1k, he opened up the filter to show me and it looked like someone sprinkled glitter in there. He was fully onboard changing it early like that. Admittedly the filter was doing its job, but the engine IS shedding metal bits as it breaks in, so why wouldn't you get it out of there! To me, it feels similar to marketing claims where carmakers say their cars don't need maintenance for a zillion miles or whatever. My brother has a Ford truck with a maintenance schedule that calls for spark plugs every 100k miles. Sounds good in the brochure but they simply don't last that long in the real world.... Just my two cents. :)

2021 992; I changed oil at 2,000 miles and I'll do it again at 6k. Then I'll get the 10k service done, with another oil change. Maybe it's not necessary but I also don't see how it could possibly hurt anything either. I'll get the gear oil changed yearly. I'll have the coolant and brake fluid flushed and changed every two years. I'm going to try my best to get at least 10k per year; I don't have a commute but there's lots of great roads around.

I've also got an 84 Targa so I need to keep in the rotation and drive it enough to keep all the parts working and happy.

I'm keeping both of these things 'till I die so I'll be staying on the 4k mile oil change routine. The oil is kind of expensive but so are the engines.

Best,
Karl

It really amazed me when I asked a Service Advisor that we do not need to do an engine oil break in service on these cars. I'm a BMW guy and for the Ms they do a break in service at 1,200 miles, which it is oil and filter and transmission fluid, for the manual transmissions and rear end fluid too. And then they will follow their intervals, which it is every 10k miles. I do every 5k miles oil changes. Keep the filter clean and oil clean. When I get my 911 GTS, I will do a break in oil change at 1k-1,200 miles with oil and oil filter. I know that our engines are already broken in at the factory, but I will still be easy on the first 1k miles, until I change the oil and filter. I think that driving your car with the metal shavings slushing in and around your engine for 10k miles or a year, is way too much and kind of scary really. But that is my opinion though.
