Tim,
Thanks for the link.
Interesting stuff.....if you look at the genesis of the Boxster and the 996....the state of Porsche when they were designed and produced, and how the combination pretty much saved Porsche and also financed the expansion to other models, it all makes sense.

You're so correct Rob - it does makes a lot of sense.

As I mentioned to you, this guy, Jeff Richardson, is a hard core Porsche fan. He loves both the 911s and the 986/718 cars, but has really taken the highly technical step of tearing them apart (literally and otherwise!) to point out the loads of shared components.

It was interesting that he was clear to draw the line with 992s, stating that they were a completely different car than earlier gen water-cooled 911s. I don't think he mentions it but I would add that the earlier gen water-cooled GT cars have far fewer shared components with the 986/718 cars. (IIRC, he uses "Carrera" as his defining term when making the parts comparisons, so he covered that aspect I think.)

Also, regarding 992s, it's interesting to note that the death knell for ICE Cayman/Boxsters had long been in the works, so there was no need to refresh the line substantially outside of the GT4 RS coupe and Spyder GT4 RS.

The YouTube channel from Mr Jeff Richardson is chock full of help/how-to videos for Porsches. It's worth checking out, especially for the many DIYers.
