Hello everyone today I installed a 2 quart sump extension . I purchased this used from Jake Raby when I worked for him . It has some mods inside that Jake did . Anyway all went as expected I am going to let the sealant dry for 2 days before adding oil . I am hoping no leaks .

I am going to purchase the LN Engineering skid plate next and install that . I don't race but I am taking precautions to make my 3.8 live a long time . I have the UAOS so should be able to fill with 11 quarts .

Nice job! Looks like you did not use excessive sealant. Which sealant did you use, there is an overwhelming amount of selection out there now.
A friend of mine with a 996 had one of these installed and the RTV was squeezing out all over the outside. Not long after his engine blew up and there was large chunks of RTV all over the oil pickup screen.

^^^ Thanks . I used Permatex gray RTV . I have seen enough sump plate installs to know roughly how much to use . A small amount of squeeze out is OK but a lot is asking for trouble . As long as it doesn't leak I used enough .

Agreed, I try to use enough to be able to prove I was there but no more... at least on flange surfaces like there where there are no gaps to fill.

I checked the sealant this morning , it's drying nicely . I used an inspection mirror and flashlight and confirmed slight squeeze out the entire perimeter . Hopefully the interior is the same . Oil will go in tomorrow just to be extra cautious .

Never saw one of these before. What a great idea... Now I have to look at every motor I own to see if something similar is possible.

Generally speaking the sump extensions are available in .5 , 1 and 2 quart sizes . I went with the 2 quart because it was a used purchase at a good price . But the 2 quart makes the sump plate the lowest item of the engine . Hence the skid plate is a good idea . Not sure about the ground clearance on the .5 and 1 quart variety . I have the 2 quart on my Boxster but the engine is further forward in a mid engine . I do not have a skid plate on that car and have never hit/dragged the sump plate .

It's just something to consider before purchase . Like many things there are pluses and minuses . The risk of impact to me is worth the minor risk vs the reward of the extra oil capacity . And the risk is survivable with the additional skid plate . Obviously paying attention to speed bumps and steep angles is a wise move .

Today I added 10.5 quarts of oil and fired her up . I kept it on my lift so I could watch for an Exxon Valdez moment . I am happy to report after 20 minutes she's bone dry . The sump was hot to the touch so should have been a good test .

I will let her set overnight and check oil level in the morning and adjust if needed . I am satisfied with the results just need to order the skid plate .

Now you won’t have to worry about oil starvation during those long and fast sweepers. Time to go find some great roads!

^^^ I am fortunate , living in north Georgia I am surrounded by great mountain roads . I have a 55 mile loop through the mountains that is my driving favorite . Lots of switch backs and elevation changes with fantastic views . I drive it often . I call it road therapy .
