Rod Bearing clearance with Carrillo Rods?

I talked with a friend at a local shop today who mentioned they have had problems with Carrillo rods in 911 engines when running factory clearances. Is this an issue for the 944 engines as well?

I am about to install a fresh engine and am using the Carrillo rods and the ACL bearings with the factory clearances.

Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

My 3L motor has Carrillo rods and factory clearances. No known issue here after 35k miles or so. I'm thinking the Internet would be full of stories if there was an issue, since lots of Carrillo rods are out there...

What weight oil are you going to use?

After break-in I will run VR-1 20w-50 most likely. May run 5w-40 Motul as I have a couple of boxes of that from a long gone BMW.

Interesting articles. It seems that more clearance is better up to a point. Kind of like ring end gaps.

When I bought my turbo 15 years ago, I used 5w-40, and had one or two oil drips on my drive. Switched to 15w-50 and the oil drips dried up.

I am curious about the specific issue your friend's shop has seen with this rod/bearing combo. Too little clearance and wear/spun rod bearings? Too much clearance?

More information would be helpful.

I'm a cynic, so would also be curious if they have a different brand they prefer to promote.

He said that the factory clearances were not enough. The Carrillo rods are very stable and do not grow like the factory rods. They are fans of Carrillo's and use them frequently. No agenda there.

I do not want to start any rumors about air cooled 911 engines, but they claim do have discussed it with Ollie's in CA.

Just with those bearings or even with the stock bearings? I have no first-hand experience with them on a 911, so take my comments/cynicism with a grain of salt. Just curious and wondering out loud really. 8-)
