Looking for some honest opinions on switching to a 2024 718 GTS 4.0. I’m a long time Porsche owner. Past to current Porsches I’ve owned include a 1972 914 1.7, 1974 914 2.0, 2007 Cayman S, 2008 Cayman S, 2008 911 S Cabriolet, and currently a low mileage 2013 991 911 S Cabriolet. I have a deposit on a 2024 718 GTS 4.0, trading in the 2013 911. I’ve always loved the 718 Cayman/Boxster platform, especially the GTS. Is there anything I will possibly miss when downsizing to the 718 other than the backseat which has never been used. Hoping to move forward with no regrets. Though it’s hard to have any regrets when driving a Porsche. Looking forward to any informative comments.
Thanks !

Welcome to Carpokes!

I love my 718 GT4. But I can say the same for the 911 too, so it's never an easy choice. There is no wrong choice imo.

The 718's are so wonderfully balanced and fun to drive. Nimble and light on their feet - fantastic sports cars that are as fun and well sorted as any I've ever owned, and there have been many.

As you said, there are few regrets when driving any Porsche model. One thing to consider is that this is the last model year for the 718's as we know them. No more ICE.

However, 911's will be available in more or less current form for the time being but not 718 Caymans and Boxsters.

I went from a 2006 Boxster S to my 2022 GTS 4.0. Very evolutionary car. I have not missed having a back seat in years (Miatas before) so I am the wrong guy to ask. This car is my daily driver (grocery stores, home depot, etc). My interstate car (couple of times to NC and the Smokies), and more than capable on the twisties up there. If you were local you're welcome to look at mine.

I missed it but are you looking to go Boxter or Cayman GTS? Seeing that you have lots of Cayman experience you really know a lot about what you are getting into. An updated and better version of what you had previously with a beautiful 4.0 engine!

Have you previously driven a 718?
1957 VW Beetle
2004 VW R32
2021 Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0

I doubt you will have any regrets as the Cayster with the 4.0 is quicker than a 911 of a decade back ( well obviously not a Turbo ,ha ) yet it has not lost that tossable fun nature you likely remember from your previous Cayman Ss. If you are considering PCA,NASA,SCCA, or other track events including autocrossing , the Cayman is the answer over the Boxster for it's more rigid frame. Having owned a ton of Vipers, along with plenty of Miatas, I find the Cayman GTS to feel light and nimble like a Miata with almost as much quarter mile grunt as an early Viper --- nice torque with the flat, fat power 4.0 six!!

Boxster as I like the cab top. I have not driven a 718 4.0 manual yet but am looking forward to it. Drove a PDK 718 S a few years back and didn’t enjoy the PDK as good a transmission as it is.

Having owned a 987 Cayman S, a 981 CGTS, and now my 718 GTS 4.0, it is the natural evolution of the mid-engine Porsche hard top. Torque is king in city driving(and accelerating out of corners on track) and the difference is very noticeable. I love mine but unfortunately it looks like it will soon leave me due to advanced age(driver), something I can't prevent. You won't be sorry, it's a phenomenal car.

Since you enjoy going topless one thing I would comment on based on over 30+ years selling automotive machines ( mostly performance beasts ) the manual will likely garner more resale in future years. That said, if like me ,your main focus is autocrossing or track time, the PDK is remarkable and good to shave off a half a second to 60 and through a quarter mile , which adds up quickly, especially on a road course.

Bill say it ain't true, at 72 in less than a month my Cayman and other toys are what keep me young ( well in my mind, ha ), hang on to your Red Porsche, and take a drive today --- I bet you will feel 21 again by the time you get back home.

Thanks for the offer, but I’m up in New England. Great opinion though.
